Aust. Standards Piling Code

The Australian Standards Piling Code AS 2159 was last updated and issued in 1995. A committee has been reviewing the Code under the leadership of Dr Harry Poulos for the past 2 years and it is anticipated that an updated Code should be published within the next 12 months.

The Federation was requested to provide a representative to this committee and has been fortunate to have had David Klingberg of Wagstaff Piling as a representative.

David provided a very through and concise report in the current status of the Code review at the recent General Meeting of the Federation held at the Crowne Plaza Norwest in Sydney. A copy of his presentation is attached for reference.

About 12 months ago a draft of the proposed updated Code was circulated to a wide number of interested parties and over 400 submissions had been received by the Committee. These submissions had all now been addressed and it was possible that the updated draft would be available in the very near future.

A lively interchange of ideas was had at the meeting, as contractor members pointed out that this document would become the design 'bible' for the industry for the next decade or so in the same way the 1995 issue had become for the last decade. The members expressed their desire that, because of the very important nature of this publication and the significant number of changes that had been incorporated since the first draft, the updated draft should also be circulated for comment prior to becoming a final document. By a majority vote taken at the meeting the contractor members requested that a formal request should be made to Dr Poulos for this to occur.
